What is matcha?
Matcha is finely ground powder of specially cultivated green tea leaves. Unlike regular tea, where the leaves are steeped and discarded, matcha dissolves completely in water, allowing you to consume the entire leaf. This results in an intense green color, a rich flavor, and sustained energy.
What does matcha taste like?
Good matcha has a fresh, grassy, and slightly sweet taste with a characteristic umami note. Cheaper matcha can be more bitter. The quality is often divided into ceremonial grade, which is drunk pure, and culinary grade, which is perfect for lattes, baking, and smoothies.
How to make matcha latte
- Sift 1 to 2 teaspoons of matcha into a cup to avoid lumps.
- Add a small splash of hot, but not boiling, water, around 80 degrees Celsius.
- Whisk vigorously with a bamboo whisk or a small balloon whisk until frothy.
- Heat milk of your choice and lightly froth it.
- Pour the milk over the matcha and sweeten with a little honey or syrup if desired.
Important: do not use boiling water
Water that is too hot makes the matcha bitter. Aim for around 80 degrees Celsius. Let the water stand for a minute after boiling, and you're safe. Sifting the powder before whisking also prevents lumps and results in a smoother drink.
Iced matcha
In summer, an iced matcha tea or iced matcha latte is fantastic. Whisk the matcha in a little water as usual, pour over cold milk and ice, and stir well. Refreshing and full of energy.
Why many people love matcha
Matcha provides caffeine, but together with the amino acid L-theanine, which gives a calmer and more sustained energy than coffee, without the abrupt crash. In addition, matcha is rich in antioxidants. It's no wonder the drink has become so popular.
