Ask someone which Monster they drink, and you'll rarely get a product name in reply. You'll get a color. "The pink one." "The green one." "The turquoise one." That's perfectly logical – Monster has over 70 varieties in circulation, and the color of the can is all most people need to remember.
The problem arises at the shelf, when four pink cans are standing side by side. Here's the overview.
The colors, explained
Green – Monster Green
The original. The one that launched the entire brand in 2002, and still the best-selling. Sweet, slightly tangy, with that characteristic flavor that's hard to compare to anything else. Also comes in a black can as Zero Sugar – same flavor, without the sugar.
Pink – Monster Ultra Rosa
Sugar-free, light and berry-toned. The big surprise in the Ultra series: many people who don't like regular Monster end up drinking this one. It's also the variety most people are looking for when they search for "pink monster" with us.
Blue – Monster Electric Blue
Fresh and sweet, in the bright blue can. Not to be confused with Ultra Blue Hawaiian, which is lighter in color and sugar-free.
Orange – Monster Orange Dreamsicle
Orange and vanilla – the American ice cream of the same name translated into an energy drink. Creamy in a way no other Monster variety is.
Red – Monster Ultra Ruby Red
Grapefruit, sugar-free. Comes in two versions – Ultra Ruby Red and Ultra Fantasy Ruby Red – where the Fantasy variety is the sweeter of the two.
Turquoise – Monster Ultra Fiesta
Mango. Sugar-free, and one of the most tropical flavors in the Ultra series.
White – Monster Ultra White
The light citrus variety, and for many the gateway into the Ultra series. Neutral enough to drink all day.
Black – Monster Zero Sugar and Ultra Black
Two different things in almost the same can. Zero Sugar is the green original without sugar. Ultra Black is cherry-toned and belongs to the Ultra series.
Purple – Monster Voodoo Grape
Grape, in a 444 ml can. An import variety, and one of those that tends to go fast.
The series, if you want to know where you are
Behind the colors lies a fairly tidy structure. Know the series, and you can guess the flavor before you turn the can around.
Original is the green one and Zero Sugar. Ultra is the entire sugar-free series – lighter in flavor, always with a color that tells you which fruit you're getting. Juiced is the fruity ones with juice in them: Mango Loco, Pipeline Punch, Khaotic, Monarch and Ripper. Java is iced coffee with energy, in a can. Rehab is the iced tea variety, lighter and less sweet than the rest. And then there's Reserve and the racing editions, which come and go.
How much caffeine is there, really?
A 500 ml Monster contains around 160 mg of caffeine. That's roughly equivalent to two cups of coffee. The content is largely the same across the series – it's the sugar and the flavor that set them apart, not the strength. The Ultra series has just as much caffeine as the original, just without the sugar.
Energy drinks are not recommended for children, pregnant women or people sensitive to caffeine.
Why are there flavors you never see in Norwegian stores?
Monster launches different varieties in different markets. Aussie Juiced Lemonade is made for the Australian market, several of the Java editions are sold primarily in the US, and certain Ultra flavors rotate out after a season. What reaches Norwegian grocery shelves is a small selection of what's actually produced.
At FUDI we regularly import varieties from the US, Australia and Asia. That means the selection changes – and that it pays to secure your favorite while it's in stock. You'll find the full range in our Monster collection.
