Gluten-Free Noodles

Noodles without gluten are simpler than many people think. Rice noodles, glass noodles and shirataki are naturally gluten-free, because they are made from rice, mung beans or konjac root instead of wheat. Here we have gathered the noodles in our range whose ingredient list is free of wheat, barley and rye, and whose allergen labelling does not declare gluten.

The types you can choose from

Rice noodles are the largest group. Wide banh pho for pho and pad thai, and thin rice vermicelli for summer rolls and salads. They usually only need soaking in hot water rather than boiling.

Glass noodles are made from mung bean or sweet potato starch and turn transparent when done. They hold up well in a wok or soup without falling apart.

Shirataki and konjac noodles consist of almost nothing but water and konjac flour. They are very low in carbohydrates and come ready to use in the pouch.

How we assessed the range

Every product has been checked against the ingredient and allergen list on the pack. Items carrying a may-contain warning for wheat or gluten are left out, even where the noodles themselves are made from rice. That applies to most ready-made instant pouches and cups, where the seasoning sauce often contains wheat-based soy sauce. If you have coeliac disease, always read the pack before use – labelling can change between production batches.

Frequently asked questions

Are rice noodles always gluten-free? The noodles themselves generally are, but ready-made instant portions often have a seasoning sauce containing wheat. That is why most of the pouches and cups are not included here.

Are glass noodles gluten-free? Yes. Genuine glass noodles are made from mung bean or sweet potato starch and contain no wheat.

What about soba? Soba is made from buckwheat, which despite the name is not wheat – but almost all soba on the market is blended with wheat flour. The soba noodles we stock contain wheat, so they are not listed here.

Are udon and ramen gluten-free? No. Both udon and ordinary ramen are wheat noodles. See all noodles if you do not need gluten-free.
